World, meet poetess Ashley ‘Ajay’ Johnson of New York! I met Ashley through the wonderful cyberworld of Facebook, where she reached out and wrote to me about poetry! She entered the previous Miss Universe contest, and although she didn’t get the prize that time, I was still very much impressed with her poetry. Her poem, “Ghost of Malcolm’s Little Glasses”, and “Trip to the Sun” are beautiful pieces of work that she created with the fam over at Urban Word NYC. Check after the jump to read her work!
Ghost of Malcolm Littleās Glasses
I was a messenger of his intent.
Magnifying passion behind
his words in private
leaked through ducts
in frustration laced tears
But
He was a militant
A leader
shadowing heresy’s heroism
required him to be
Stoic
Emotionless
no wincing
when obligations dug their soles in his frontal lobe
it was hard to seek solace in Allah.
When the bullets pierced skin
Blood washed his memories of Mecca
and
my lens cracked.
I died too
You know
I was the mirror to his soul.
I choose revolutionary’s road
ignoring the easy pass
but now
I’d prefer
to be a mirror
that was thrown
Away
I know Ashley, and her work is so amazing (especially her performances)! It’s great that her work is reaching others
I know Ashley too, and I must say, I’m so proud of all the work and progress she’s shown in her writing. To think she only started writing poetry this year….oh and ill-literacy is HOT!
